Біографія ред.

Донька протестантського священика. З дитинства хотіла стати письменницею. Вирушила до Лондона, де, проводячи багато часу в читальному залі Британського музею, самостійно підготувалася до письменницької кар'єри. Дебютувала в 1861 році, 17-річною.

Найбільш відомі її романи для дівчаток і жінок, які відразу стали користуватися величезною популярністю (деякі з них виходили в серії «Маленькі жінки» — «Дівочий маленький світ», «Шкільна королева», «Чудовий замок» та ін.).

Письменниця експериментувала й в інших жанрах, створивши цілий ряд сентиментальних, релігійних, історичних, пригодницьких і детективних романів, а також повістей. Її літературна спадщина складається з 300 творів, включаючи короткі оповідання та статті в журналах. У перші кілька років після її смерті з'явилося не менше 11 нових книг під її ім'ям.

Редагувала популярний жіночий журнал «Аталанта».

У вересні 1879 року одружилася з Альфредом Тулміном Смітом.
